How can I tell if my drain field is failing?

Published 2026-10-27

A drain field rarely fails all at once. More often there are small warning signs first. Drains run slower than they used to. Pipes gurgle. There is a smell near the tank or the yard. A patch of ground over the field stays wet when the rest of the lawn is dry, or the grass there is noticeably greener than everything around it.

The most serious sign is sewage backing up into the house or coming up in the yard. That is a health risk. Stop using water and call a septic pro right away.

None of these signs prove the field is dead. A full tank, a broken line or roots can cause similar symptoms. A pro can check the tank, the lines and the soil and tell you what is going on. Ask what they found and ask to see it.

Quick list

  • Slow drains or gurgling pipes in more than one fixture
  • Sewage odor near the tank or the field
  • Wet, spongy ground or standing water over the field
  • A strip of lush green grass over the field
  • Sewage backing up indoors: stop using water and call a pro now
Check before you hire: Before you hire anyone, ask for their Florida license or registration number and check it with the state. Ask for proof of liability coverage, a written scope of work and a written contract. Septic work in Florida generally needs a permit, so ask who pulls it.
