The choice depends on why the field is failing. If the cause is a broken pipe, a blocked distribution box, roots or one overloaded section, a repair can work. If the soil itself has clogged or the water table is too high, a repair usually will not last, and replacement is the more realistic path.
A good pro will check the tank, look at the lines, test how the soil handles water and ask about how the system has been used. They should be able to explain why they recommend one or the other. If you are not sure, a second opinion is reasonable.
We connect homeowners with local septic pros. We do not make the call for you. Ask questions and get the scope in writing.
Quick list
- Ask what caused the failure
- Ask what a repair would fix and what it would not
- Ask what would make replacement necessary
- Get any plan in writing before work begins
